Choosing a layout
The layout should follow the photos, not the other way round. Two portraits sit naturally side by side; two landscapes want to be stacked. The “1 + 2” layout is the most useful of the set — one hero image with two supporting shots — because it creates a hierarchy instead of treating every photo as equal.
Gaps and frames
A gap of two or three per cent reads as deliberate. Zero gives a flush, editorial block that works well when the photos share a palette. Large gaps with a white frame look like a scrapbook, which is a real style but a loud one — and on a white feed background the frame disappears, so the collage reads as separate floating images.
Keep the crop in mind
Every cell centre-crops. A photo where the subject sits off to one side will lose that subject in a narrow cell, so give the important part of the frame some room, or put that photo in the largest cell.
Questions
How many photos can I put in a collage?
Between two and four, depending on the layout. The eight layouts cover two side by side, two stacked, three in a row or column, a large photo with two smaller ones, and a 2×2 grid.
Will my photos be stretched?
No. Each photo is centre-cropped to fill its cell, so proportions are always preserved and only the edges are trimmed.
What size does it export?
1080px on the long edge — Instagram's display size. Square and 4:5 portrait canvases are both available.
Can I change the gap and corners?
Yes. Both are sliders, expressed as a percentage of the canvas so they stay proportional at any output size. Set the gap to zero for a flush, borderless collage.
Can I use a video frame like the app does?
Not on the web yet — that is Android-only for now. Take a screenshot of the frame you want and drop it in as a photo.
